Ol' Thumpy headphones with Helmholtz resonators - bass that no other headphones can deliver

Ol' Thumpy, headphones featuring two Helmholtz resonators, were designed by Philip from the YouTube channel Pud's Small Batch Headphones. The two large spheres protruding from each driver enhance the bass.

The resonator in these headphones delivers powerful bass that is unmatched by other designs. Philip offers a variety of headphone models for sale, producing about 20 to 50 pairs of each design, available on his own website.

“You know when you blow into a Coke bottle, and it makes a 'whoo' sound — that's a Helmholtz resonator. It's tuned to a specific frequency. Here, the resonator is tuned to 60 Hz, producing a very deep bass tone,” Philip explains.

Each model from Pud's Small Batch Headphones has a standout design feature. For example, the Polycule model has four ear cushions “so a friend can listen too.” The practicality of this is questionable, but it is undoubtedly conceptual and original. These are not merely pointless designs. They may seem quirky, but they are functional and well-made.

Wearing Ol' Thumpy on the street may seem dubious, but listening to how the bass sounds, and potentially enjoying music on a regular basis — why not? Another possible use for Philip's models is among DJs, who sometimes adorn their heads with whimsical designs.
