Today, Apple has officially retired the MacBook with 8 GB of RAM. The company announced that 16 GB is now the new minimum configuration for the MacBook Air equipped with M2 and M3 processors.
The newly introduced MacBook Pro models with M4 Pro and Max chips will also feature at least 16 GB of RAM. As a result, the current lineup of Apple laptops no longer includes devices that received criticism last year for their limited memory.
However, the base model MacBook Air still starts at $999. Previously, customers had to pay an additional $200 to upgrade to 16 GB. Apple took a similar approach in 2016 when it set a minimum of 8 GB for the 13-inch MacBook Air and discontinued the 11″ model with 4 GB shortly after.
Among the reasons cited for the increase in RAM for the MacBook Air is the integration of Apple Intelligence—artificial intelligence models typically require significant memory to function efficiently. While iPhones will continue to operate with 8 GB, macOS software may demand greater resources.
