The upcoming third-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA will feature a 2.0T four-cylinder engine developed by Geely and Horse. The latter, officially known as Horse Powertrain Limited, was established on May 31, 2024, as a 50:50 joint venture between Geely and Renault.
The engine's power output is rated at 250 horsepower (186 kW), with a peak torque of 360 Nm. Previous reports indicated that the internal combustion engine to be used in the CLA was designed and developed through a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. It is worth mentioning that Geely, through its CEO Li Shufu, holds approximately a 10% stake in Mercedes-Benz and also has a joint venture with the electric vehicle manufacturer Smart.
Although the engine is manufactured in China, the catalytic converter will be installed in Germany to meet stringent emission standards. It was previously reported that the engine would be part of a 48-volt mild hybrid system, utilizing an integrated starter mounted on the transmission.
The new Mercedes-Benz CLA will be built on the MMA platform and will offer mild hybrid and fully electric powertrains. Reports indicate that there will not be a plug-in hybrid option.
Additionally, it should be noted that the engine from Geely will not be the only Chinese technology utilized in the CLA. The vehicle will also feature a high-level intelligent driving system from the Chinese startup Momenta. This means that the CLA will be the first Mercedes-Benz equipped with urban driving assistance features. Momenta was founded in 2016, and Mercedes-Benz was the first investor in the company, participating in a Series B funding round in 2017.
It is expected that the fully electric versions of the CLA will come with a rear-mounted electric motor rated at 175 kW and an 89.6 kWh battery, providing a range of up to 750 km (WLTC). Thus, the energy consumption will be just 12 kWh per 100 km. The MMA platform will feature an 800 V architecture, allowing for a 400 km range increase after 15 minutes of charging.
The all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA is anticipated to debut in 2025, although the mild hybrid version may not go on sale until 2026.
