To keep pace with Xiaomi, which has entered the electric vehicle market, Chinese tech giant Oppo is looking to broaden its reach beyond the mobile segment. The company has announced a strategic partnership with BYD to integrate smartphone technology into smart automotive systems. This will enable management of various aspects of BYD's electric vehicles directly from an Oppo smartphone.

The first outcome of this partnership is the integration of the Oppo Find X8 series with the BYD Denza Z9 GT sedan. Find X8 owners can now unlock their cars and control certain functions of their Z9 GT. Looking ahead, the integration will deepen. This approach reflects similar strategies adopted by other tech giants like Huawei and vivo, as companies seek to leverage the growing synergy between mobile devices and the automotive industry.

Oppo's collaboration with BYD will start with basic integration of phones and vehicles, but both companies have ambitious plans for the future. BYD and Oppo will focus on developing specialized hardware modules and software systems. They also plan to jointly approach the development of intelligent algorithms for smart cabin platforms, including state monitoring systems. Both companies are discussing the possibility of sharing multimedia and computational power of the vehicles.

Oppo's expansion is not limited to electric vehicles. The company is also acquiring AIWaves, a startup specializing in generative AI. AIWaves has developed a large language model called Weaver that supports generative AI services similar to ChatGPT. This acquisition will enable Oppo to integrate advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into its devices, offering features such as AI-assisted writing, enhanced photography, and a more intuitive user interface.
