Microsoft has launched the Windows App for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, browsers, Android, and even Windows PCs. Essentially, the Windows App serves as a hub for streaming a copy of Windows from various sources, including Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, and more.

This new unified application has been in testing for almost a year. It features a customizable main screen, support for multiple monitors, and USB redirection, allowing users to utilize local devices such as webcams, storage devices, and printers as if they were directly connected to a cloud PC.

The Windows App is limited to work and school Microsoft accounts, as it is primarily designed for current users of the Windows Remote Desktop client and other operating systems. Microsoft has had similar remote access applications for Windows computers for decades, including the Remote Desktop Connection app, which is still included with Windows 11. These applications, including the new Windows App, are useful for connecting to work computers from personal laptops or PCs.

Currently, there are no indications that Microsoft plans to support consumer accounts in its new Windows App. Last year, it was reported that Microsoft has a long-term goal to fully transition Windows to the cloud to “provide enhanced AI-based services and complete roaming of individuals' digital experiences.”

Windows users can obtain the Windows App from the Microsoft Store. It is also available on the Apple App Store for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS. A public beta version is offered for Android.
