The developers of the new role-playing game Avowed have chosen to omit romantic relationships between characters, despite the success of this mechanic in Baldur's Gate 3.
“This is an enormous amount of work,” notes game director Carrie Patel about romantic systems. “Everything has to be executed perfectly. It’s important to ensure that a player who does not choose the romantic path but wants to have deep relationships with companions receives a complete and meaningful experience on the friendship route, just as they would on the romantic path. Therefore, we decided that we can tell the stories of our companions and their relationships without the romantic option.”
The new project from Obsidian Entertainment, set in the Pillars of Eternity universe, focuses on four meticulously developed companions.
“We wanted each of them to have a key role in the story, different party roles, unique personalities, and ways in which they complement each other and tell the player the story of the Living Lands,” Patel reveals.
Particular attention is drawn to one companion, whose heart belongs to another. “We seldom see in games a character’s story that travels with you but is torn between duty and love,” the director shares.
Avowed is set to debut early next year, and while comparisons to the triumphant 2023 hit from Larian Studios are inevitable, the team is confidently charting its own course.
“Romance works great in some games,” Patel acknowledges, but adds firmly: “Players always respond well to a really well-written character.”
As a reminder, Avowed was postponed to early 2025 in August.
