Sony and Amazon have embarked on a revamp of the "God Of War" series, which is based on the immensely popular PlayStation game centered around ancient mythology.
Showrunner Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have departed from the project after the initial scripts were completed. Meanwhile, according to Deadline, the trio’s scripts received "high praise" from both Sony and Amazon — it seems the studios simply decided to take the project in a different direction.
A completely new team of writers is now set to be hired for the project, while Judkins will continue his collaboration with Amazon as the showrunner for "The Wheel of Time" (his overall deal with Sony remains in effect — he will just focus on new developments).
The announcement regarding the development of the "God Of War" series was made in December 2022 — the plot was set to follow the god of war, Kratos, who embarks on a perilous journey with his son to scatter his wife's ashes from the highest peak.
“Soon, Kratos realizes that the journey is a disguised epic adventure that will test the bond between father and son, forcing Kratos to confront new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
The God of War franchise launched with its first game in 2005. The action-adventure series now includes seven games developed for four PlayStation consoles.
Cory Barlog, the director of the 2018 God of War and creative director of God of War Ragnarok, is still involved in the series as an executive producer. The rest of the team, along with the cast, release date, and other details remain undisclosed for now.
