Google is introducing a new feature for automatically generating subtitles for video files uploaded to Google Drive, utilizing speech recognition technology.
The new functionality operates differently for personal Google accounts and Google Workspace users. Personal account holders must manually request subtitle generation after uploading their videos. In contrast, Google Workspace clients will have subtitles generated automatically upon upload, unless administrators choose to disable this option.
To generate subtitles, users can right-click on the video in Drive and select "Manage subtitle tracks," followed by "Generate automatic subtitles." An alternative method is to use the three-dot menu in the upper right corner during video playback.
The implementation of automatic subtitles significantly enhances the accessibility of media content in Drive. "Subtitles make it easy to search for videos based on their content, which simplifies finding the desired file," Google developers noted.
Currently, the feature supports only the English language, but Google plans to expand language support in the future, making this functionality available to even more users around the globe.
