OpenAI has announced its entry into the search market and the launch of SearchGPT—a real-time web-based AI search engine.
The main page of the SearchGPT search engine features a large text box prompting users with the question, “What are you searching for?”. Instead of delivering a typical list of links, SearchGPT strives to organize and comprehend the information. In one example, OpenAI’s search engine summarizes details about music festivals and then offers concise descriptions of events along with source links.
In another instance, it explains the optimal timing for planting tomatoes before discussing the various plant varieties. After the results appear, users can pose follow-up questions or click on a sidebar to access other relevant links. The service includes a feature called “visual answers,” showcasing videos generated by OpenAI's Sora AI, as well as themed images.
Currently, SearchGPT is in prototype status. The service operates on the GPT-4 model family and is available only to 10,000 test users. OpenAI is collaborating with third-party partners and utilizing direct content channels to generate search results. SearchGPT was created in partnership with various news organizations, including the owners of The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, and Vox Media. The ultimate goal is to integrate search functionalities directly into ChatGPT.
“SearchGPT is designed to facilitate connections between users and publishers by clearly citing and referencing them during searches,” stated OpenAI in a blog post. “Responses feature clear, embedded, named attributions and links, so users know where the information originates and can swiftly access even more results via the sidebar, including source links.”
The launch of SearchGPT marks the onset of what could become a significant threat to Google. The tech giant is also rushing to incorporate AI capabilities into its search engine, fearing that users might flock to competing products that offer such tools first.
