Google is adding a feature to Chrome that allows users to preview video and audio from their camera for use in browser-based video conferencing services such as Zoom and Google Meet. The Chrome preview screen will allow users to configure the camera and microphone in Windows 11 and Windows 10.
Currently in Google Chrome, it is not possible to preview your own camera or audio when granting sites access to them. Google documentation confirms that Chrome will receive real-time camera and microphone preview feature.
In Chrome version 123, the feature is enabled by an experimental flag "chrome://flags#camera-mic-preview", after enabling it, the browser needs to be restarted. Chrome also allows users to select the camera and audio device before granting a site access to them. This helps to block access to unwanted cameras and microphones at the browser level.
"Users with multiple devices can choose a camera or microphone when permission is requested, unless the site has requested a specific device through getUserMedia()," Google documents say.
As noted in the Mozilla documentation, the getUserMedia function allows a site to request a specific type of equipment, such as an audio device with a specific feature, like built-in noise cancellation, or a high-resolution camera.
This will not affect the preview offered by web applications for video conferencing, such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom, but will provide greater control over the camera and sound. The preview window is in the shape of a rounded rectangle. For the microphone, there are indicators for the maximum and current sound levels, the latter updates 5 times per second for smoother feedback.
