Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, just presented, is already setting records. The expansion has not only become the game release of the year with the highest rating, but also the DLC with the highest rating of all time. The previous record belonged to The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine. CD Projekt Red celebrated the achievement with a special illustration of Geralt throwing Mog, heading to the Land of Shadows.

«For the last 8 years, The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine had the honor of being the best reviewed expansion for a role-playing game — but now Elden Ring can wear that crown. Congratulations to the entire team of FromSoftware on their stellar work!»

On Metacritic, the current score for Shadow of the Erdtree is an incredible 95 points on PS5 based on 59 critic reviews. It surpasses the 92 Metascore for Blood and Wine on PC, based on 52 critic reviews.

The fact that The Witcher 3 expansion held its crown for so long speaks to its quality. However, representatives from CD Projekt Red are not at all disappointed and are happy to be "stuck" in Shadow of the Erdtree. The studio's International Community Director, Marcin Momot, notes:

«It was a good run. Nevertheless, SUPER HYPED for this Friday».

This same sentiment was echoed by Philipp Weber, the narrative director of the new Witcher saga, who was previously a quest designer on Blood and Wine:

«If any game had to do it, I'm happy it's Elden Ring. I can't wait to start the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, so it's high time I finish levelling up my new character to be ready!»

Despite the excitement, the expansion seems to be very challenging. Elden Ring veterans have already suffered humiliation from the first boss and quickly proved that even those who thought they were ready for the DLC could expect tough times.
