To say that FromSoftware games are tough is an understatement, but Shadow of the Erdtree in Elden Ring may have set a new record. The addition to Elden Ring, which has become the highest-rated on Metacritic and surpassed the eight-year achievement of The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine, has received mixed reviews on Steam. Even for soulslike enthusiasts accustomed to challenging combat, playing it is too difficult.

Currently, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree on Steam has a "Mixed" rating based on reviews from over 25,000 users, with only 62% being positive - meaning 38% of PC players have left the Lands Between with unpleasant experiences. This result is far from the outstanding 93% positive reviews the base game received based on a colossal 627,000 reviews. Poor user reviews point to weak performance and elevated difficulty as the causes of dissatisfaction. Bosses can kill with a single blow, and it's difficult to read their attack patterns.

"This DLC needs a huge patch for balance and damage reduction. If you don't take down the bosses, you won't win. It really frustrates me that I can't play in my usual style because of the unfair punishment you get in this DLC," writes one player.

Earlier, FromSoftware's president and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki hinted that the studio had "truly pushed the boundaries in terms of what, in our opinion, players can handle." Even Elden Ring veterans are being defeated by bosses in mere minutes.
