Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has examined the pre-orders for the new iPhone 16 models and found that demand for the Pro variants has significantly decreased compared to last year. In contrast, the standard models, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, are seeing an increase in orders.

For his analysis, Kuo utilized data from Apple’s websites and a “supply chain survey,” and here are the results:

  • Demand for the iPhone 16 Pro Max has dropped by 16% compared to last year
  • Demand for the iPhone 16 Pro has fallen by 27% year-on-year
  • Demand for the iPhone 16 Plus has increased by 48% compared to last year
  • Demand for the iPhone 16 has risen by 10% compared to last year

Currently, the overall sales of the iPhone 16 lineup have reached 37 million units—approximately 12.7% less than the iPhone 15 series during the opening weekend.

Given the enhanced performance of the Tetraprism periscope camera that Apple is incorporating into the iPhone 16 Pro this year, the company has ramped up production of the flagship device to 6 million units (a 106% increase from last year). Kuo believes that Apple might plan a “more aggressive” strategy for the following year if Apple Intelligence does not help boost iPhone 16 supplies in 2025.

“One of the key factors for the lower-than-expected demand for the iPhone 16 Pro series is that the primary sales trigger, Apple Intelligence, is unavailable at the launch of the iPhone 16. Furthermore, intense competition continues in the Chinese market,” the analyst writes.

All four iPhone 16 models, along with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, are equipped with 8 GB of RAM—primarily to support Apple Intelligence. However, some key AI features will only be available in December with version 18.2 (iOS 18.1 is expected today).
