The space company Axiom Space and the fashion house Prada unveiled the design of the new AxEMU space suitAxiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. This suit has been designed for NASA's Artemis III mission, which aims to return humans to the Moon in 2026.
The new spacesuit will be made from a white thermal insulation material. It is intended to protect astronauts from extreme temperatures in various locations on the Moon and safeguard them from lunar dust.
The AxEMU is equipped with advanced technologies to ensure a comfortable experience in outer space. Astronauts will be able to work outside the spacecraft for up to eight hours. The suit features an enhanced diagnostic system, a carbon dioxide scrubber, and a helmet with an expanded field of view.
Axiom Space engineers conducted numerous tests on the AxEMU, including underwater trials, to ensure its reliability and functionality.
The Artemis III mission plans to send four astronauts to the Moon's south pole. The expedition will last 30 days, during which the crew will conduct scientific research and experiments on the surface of Earth's satellite. This will mark the first landing of astronauts on the Moon since the Apollo program, which concluded in 1972.
