The mobile NVIDIA RTX 4090 is significantly slower than its desktop counterpart, prompting a modder to take action. This notebook, equipped with a desktop graphics card, measures 7 cm in thickness and weighs 8 kg.
The specifications of the laptop RTX 4090 are incomparable to the desktop version. It utilizes a completely different GPU, the AD103, instead of the AD102, with only 59% of the cores. The portable graphics card has 8 GB less memory and operates at a considerably lower power limit of 175 W — the desktop version can be configured for up to 600 W.
The enthusiast also installed a desktop Ryzen 9 7950X3D processor in the notebook, as some workstation-class laptops use the AM5 socket. This model even allows for a motherboard replacement (utilizing the ROG STRIX B650I Mini-ITX). The computer is equipped with dual DDR5-6800 memory totaling 32 GB, along with an Intel Optane P5800 solid-state drive.
The key upgrade is the graphics card. The modder uses a variant of the RTX 4090 with a turbo feature and a TDP of 450 W (no, this isn't the 4090D). The GPU also has a power connector conveniently positioned for the laptop. The owner even installed a 20 W stereo sound system in it.
According to their mini-review, the system is very stable, and the graphics card easily maintains the specifications with a TDP of 450 W. It heats up to 70°C — one can play games for hours without any issues.
This modified laptop isn't a one-off. The model is available for pre-order (pricing information is not yet available). It can also come equipped with a Core i9-14900K processor (up to 200 W). However, it lacks a battery. This is not surprising, given the required power and size. Without a battery, the PC is compact enough to carry in a backpack. However, the load is noticeable — it weighs 6.7 kg separately and 8 kg with the power supply. The original video about the laptop can be found here.
