According to a report from the cybersecurity firm CertiK, the number of hacker attacks on crypto platforms in September 2024 was twice as high compared to the previous month. As a result of exploits, hacks, and fraud, users lost $161.1 million, with only $2.1 million being recovered.

Additionally, the third quarter of 2024 experienced a decrease in the number of cyberattacks on cryptocurrency platforms but a significant increase in the total amount of stolen assets. According to CertiK's October 1 report, financial losses rose by approximately 9.5%, reaching $753 million. A total of 155 incidents occurred.

The Ethereum network suffered the largest losses, with 86 attacks, scams, and exploits leading to losses exceeding $387 million.

During this period, the most significant incident occurred on August 19, when a Bitcoin owner lost 4,064 BTC (approximately $238 million) due to wallet compromise.

Another large-scale theft took place on the Indian cryptocurrency exchange WazirX, where scammers managed to seize over $235 million in crypto assets.

In total, hackers stole nearly $2 billion in 2024. In the first quarter, losses amounted to $505 million, and in the second quarter, $687 million.

Phishing became the most effective attack method in the third quarter of 2024, resulting in criminals stealing over $343 million across 65 incidents.

Phishing typically involves scammers impersonating legitimate institutions to deceive users into revealing confidential information, such as usernames and passwords or private keys.
