Two students utilized Meta smart glasses to swiftly identify any strangers on the street.
Moreover, the device locates personal information about individuals, including their home address and contact details. Although the creators state they do not plan to release the source code for their project, the demonstration offers a glimpse into a highly probable dystopian future for humanity, where privacy no longer exists. Anh-Phu Nguyen and Kane Ardafio, the minds behind the project, are Harvard University students majoring in computer science. They frequently share their technical experiments on social media.
An Instagram video posted by Nguyen discusses the development of a program that transmits visual information from the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses to facial recognition tools such as Pimeyes, which scans the internet for information. A large language model then concludes the probable name and uncovers other details about the person.
“To use it, you simply put on the glasses, and as you walk past people, the glasses will identify whose faces are in the frame. The camera is used for analysis, and within seconds, their personal information appears on your phone,” explains Nguyen.
The creators named their project I-XRAY. They emphasize that many of the tools used have only become widely available in the past few years. For instance, the Meta smart glasses equipped with a camera that resemble ordinary glasses were only released last year. Such work with LLM data has only become feasible in the last two years. The capability to search for partial Social Security numbers has reached a new level as of 2023. The inventors also mention that anyone can demand the removal of personal information from the sources they gather it from.
In the video, the creators approached strangers and acted as though they knew these individuals from somewhere, after instantaneously accessing information about them.
“Although this started as a side project, Kane and I believe that the long-term release of I-XRAY is beneficial for humanity. We wouldn't want only a select few to know about tools like fastPeopleSearch or Pimeyes,” says Nguyen.
Pimeyes and Facecheck ID were used for facial recognition. To find personal information, there are FastPeopleSearch, CheckThem, and Instant Checkmate. As for Social Security number information, it cannot be removed.
