The remake of the iconic survival horror game Silent Hill 2 by the Polish studio Bloober Team has received high praise from critics. As of October 4, the game's average score on the aggregator Metacritic stands at 87, while on OpenCritic it is 86.

Reviewers noted that the developers have skillfully recreated the atmosphere of the original Silent Hill 2 while remaining true to the source material. Meanwhile, Bloober Team expanded and enriched the locations, adding their own ideas. The sound design, soundtrack, and reimagined bosses received particular acclaim, with battles against them becoming significantly more engaging.

Among the critiques, some reviewers mentioned occasional slow pacing, which can sometimes make the game feel prolonged. Additionally, some critics found the gameplay too simplified due to the abundance of supplies available for the main character.

Nonetheless, the majority of reviewers agree that Bloober Team has achieved what seemed impossible — creating a worthy remake of Silent Hill 2, making it an excellent reason to dive back into the eerie atmosphere of Silent Hill or to experience the series for the first time.

The publication Eurogamer notes:

“Against the odds, Bloober Team has delivered a remake that expands Silent Hill 2 where it counts while carefully preserving the original.”

IGN Japan states that this version of the game “shows great respect for the source material and successfully transports the classic tale of human frailty into the modern era.” The critic also praises the return of classic survival horror with a tense shoulder-based combat system.

According to GameSpot, despite the challenges, Bloober Team has made the almost impossible:

“The Silent Hill 2 remake is a dream come true.”

Screen Rant emphasizes that the game not only stays true to the original but also delights returning players with surprises. Thus, the project “justifies not only its own existence but also the potential for a large-scale revival of the Silent Hill franchise.”

GamesRadar+ points out some limitations due to strict adherence to the original's canon, yet calls the remake “an atmospheric and gripping horror game that stands alongside the Resident Evil remakes.”

In conclusion, Gamereactor UK writes:

“Bloober Team has done an excellent job, making the Silent Hill series feel significant and relevant again, something it hasn’t for many years.”

  • The original Silent Hill 2 was released in 2001 on PlayStation 2 and was later ported to Xbox and PC. The game tells the story of James Sunderland, who receives a mysterious letter from his deceased wife, Mary. In it, she asks James to return to the town of their shared past — Silent Hill. Upon arrival, the protagonist discovers that the resort town has turned into a dark and eerie place filled with grotesque creatures. Throughout the game, James must uncover the secrets of Silent Hill and confront his own tormenting past.
  • Silent Hill 2 attained cult status due to its psychologically rich and multilayered narrative that raises themes of guilt, punishment, and redemption. The game is renowned for its oppressive atmosphere created by foggy locations, a haunting soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka, and a hostile environment.
