The latest installment of Dragon Age was released yesterday and has set a Steam record for single-player games from Electronic Arts, surpassing even Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

IGN reports that the fantasy world of The Veilguard captured 70,414 players simultaneously within the first hours of its launch. The game quickly surged into the top ten most popular titles on Steam, ranking above Baldur's Gate 3 (which was released last year). The previous EA record was held by Star Wars Jedi: Survivor with a peak of 67,855 players.

Player reviews on Steam for Dragon Age 4 are "mostly positive," with 79% of reviews being favorable. Players commend its smooth and dynamic combat system (many note it's reminiscent of Hogwarts Legacy + God of War), along with its graphics, including stunning locations and impressive hair physics. However, some gamers feel that the game lacks essential elements from previous Dragon Age titles, pointing to issues with character design, the storyline, and dialogues that seem out of sync with the franchise's spirit. Additionally, there are reports of frequent game crashes during shader compilation, and users have noted that it does not run well on the Steam Deck, despite the claimed verification.

EA CEO Andrew Wilson expressed optimism about the game's future during a financial conference. He stated that BioWare has finally returned to its roots—creating engaging role-playing adventures. An added bonus has been the postponement of the release of a potential competitor, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Shadows.

Critics have already dubbed The Veilguard a triumphant return for the series. Reviews highlight that the game not only revives the spirit of the original Dragon Age but also sets a new standard for future BioWare projects. "The next Mass Effect will have a hard time surpassing this level," commentators note.

This success is particularly impressive considering the timing of the release—midweek. The game's audience is likely to expand even more over the weekend, allowing fans of the series to dedicate more time to the first new Dragon Age title in ten years.
