Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has shared additional insights regarding the smart display currently being developed by Apple engineers. He claims that the device will be wall-mounted, capable of managing smart home devices, and facilitating video calls, similar to the Amazon Echo Hub. The Apple smart display will operate independently, but an iPhone will be required for initial setup.
The device, resembling an iPad, will come with a 6-inch screen featuring thick bezels, an integrated camera, a battery, and speakers. It is expected to support voice control using Siri and Apple Intelligence. The unveiling of the smart display is anticipated in March of next year.
If the rumors are verified, this smart display will serve as a centralized hub for managing HomeKit-compatible devices, such as lighting, security cameras, sensors, thermostats, and more. Apple plans to expand its smart home ecosystem, as analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the company aims to begin production of a smart home surveillance camera in 2026.
The Apple smart display will employ a new operating system, which is described as a mix of the Apple Watch OS and the recently launched StandBy mode on the iPhone.
It is expected that the display will include sensors to measure the distance to a user, allowing it to adjust the content displayed based on how far the user is from the screen. The Apple display will also likely support the Handoff feature, enabling users to continue tasks across different devices.
Reports suggest that Apple has developed multiple base options for the display, allowing it to be mounted on a wall or placed on a countertop with a stand featuring additional speakers. The device will be offered in both silver and black colors.
According to Gurman, the company is also working on a more expensive version with a robotic arm that can tilt and rotate the screen.
