The new AI agent from OpenAI, codenamed "Operator," will be capable of using a computer and performing tasks on behalf of its owner (such as writing code or booking tickets).
As reported by Bloomberg, OpenAI's leadership announced in a staff meeting that the agent will be launched in January for a preview through the company's developer program.
It is worth noting that agents have already been released by Anthropic and Microsoft, and Google is also preparing a similar tool.
A few weeks ago, during a Q&A session on Reddit, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman mentioned that OpenAI will present "all the best models" but added that in his opinion "the next big breakthrough will be agents."
“I believe that 2025 will be the year when agent systems finally become mainstream,” said OpenAI's Chief Product Officer Kevin Vail at a press conference last month.
Recall that in October, OpenAI introduced web search capability in ChatGPT, enabling the chatbot to provide links to web sources in its responses. As for GPT-5, it seems that the new model is not expected to arrive anytime soon.
