Analysts at TD Cowen have calculated that the production cost of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is $485—essentially, this new smartphone has cost Apple $32 more (+7%) compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
For comparison, the production cost of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is approximately 12% higher than its counterpart from the iPhone 14 series.
The analysis took into account the price of components, packaging, and assembly processes. In the assembly of the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the most expensive components turned out to be the display and the rear camera module—each costing $80, which is 16% of the total. The camera experienced the most significant price increase (+$10) among all components compared to the previous generation.
Despite unchanged amounts of RAM and storage in the Pro Max, the overall cost of components increased by $5—to $17 and $22 respectively.
It is worth noting that the official price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 256GB of storage starts at $1199 (though prices vary by country).
Meanwhile, the production cost of the iPhone 16 was $416 (with Apple's official price for the base model set at $799)—this is $21 more than for the equivalent iPhone 15 model.
In the assembly of the iPhone 16, the most expensive component is the display—costing $65, which accounts for 16% of the total. Again, the most significant price increase here is related to memory: from $9 for the 6GB version in the iPhone 15 to $17 for the 8GB version. Other notable changes include the A18 chip priced at $45 (compared to the A16 at $35) and the camera button, which cost $3.
