Gigabyte has unveiled its first Thunderbolt 5 expansion card, which utilizes the Intel JHL9580 Thunderbolt 5 controller and features a PCIe 4.0 x4 interface.
The Gigabyte Thunderbolt 5 card is equipped with three Mini DisplayPort connectors and two USB Type-C ports that are compliant with Thunderbolt 5 specifications. It includes three Mini DisplayPort cables and three internal connector cables — two for Thunderbolt and one for USB.
The Thunderbolt 5 interface operates at speeds of up to 80 Gbps, which is double the speed of Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4. However, in certain scenarios with external display connections, it can provide bandwidth of up to 120 Gbps. Gigabyte promises support for daisy-chaining up to 10 devices (5 devices per USB-C port) and Power Delivery 3.1 standards with up to 100W per port.
With Gigabyte's expansion cards, any PC users with PCIe 4.0 support can access the Thunderbolt 5 ecosystem. The port speed enables the use of external graphics cards, the connection of additional monitors, high-speed external storage, and more.
Currently, existing storage devices are primarily designed for speeds of 48-50 Gbps, but future Thunderbolt 5 drives are expected to be even faster. There are currently few Thunderbolt 5 devices on the market, but they are emerging, and the standard is backward compatible.
