Not only Huawei is working on a foldable smartphone with two hinges and a triple display (the estimated price of this monster exceeds $4000). Tecno is also developing a similar device and has already presented its concept called Phantom Ultimate 2.
Current horizontal foldable devices are blurring the lines between smartphones and small tablets, but the Phantom Ultimate 2 offers an even larger screen that competes with full-sized tablets. The Phantom Ultimate 2 can extend its display from a 6.48-inch diagonal in its folded state to a 10-inch tablet mode. The device features an LTPO OLED screen with a resolution of 2880x1620 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3. Tecno claims that the Phantom Ultimate 2 is the first foldable device with TDDI technology, which integrates both the display driver and the touch sensor onto one chip. It also supports touchless control — when a hand hovers over the screen's surface. The device is surprisingly thin, measuring only 11 mm when fully folded. Such compactness has been achieved thanks to a dual-hinge mechanism of their own design. Tecno has tested the hinge mechanism for 300,000 folding cycles. The company has also created the thinnest battery cover among all smartphones, measuring just 0.25 mm. The dual hinge helps minimize creases on the screen in the middle of the display. Tecno envisions several unique use cases for the Phantom Ultimate 2, including a laptop mode with a folded lower part featuring a keyboard for note-taking. The tent mode positions the two equal screen halves on opposite sides for seamless face-to-face conversations on the dual display with live translation. The enormous 10-inch screen of the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 also supports a multi-window mode, allowing three or more applications to run simultaneously, which enhances multitasking.
Tecno has yet to announce any specific plans for the launch of its first foldable device.
