The Web3 security company Scam Sniffer reported that while searching for the official website of Soneium, specialists encountered sponsored ads on Google leading to a fraudulent page. Users who clicked on this ad, connected their wallets, and signed permissions risked losing all their digital assets. This suspicious advertisement appeared when searching for the term "someium."
The link used a domain suffix that differed from the official Soneium website and resembled an unfinished landing page for the UK radiological service.
Soneium is a public, open-layer 2 blockchain based on Ethereum, developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs, a joint project between Sony and Startale Labs.
In early October, Scam Sniffer reported that in September, 10,805 victims of phishing attacks lost cryptocurrencies worth over $46 million. Additionally, over $127 million worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen in the third quarter of 2024. The most common targets of crypto phishing attacks were Ether (ETH) wallets.
Previously, a mobile crypto drainer disguised as the legit WalletConnect app was found on Google Play.
