Ferrari has started accepting cryptocurrency payments for its sports cars in the United States and will expand this scheme to Europe at the request of its wealthy clients, the company's marketing and commerce director told Reuters.
The vast majority of car companies stay away from cryptocurrencies, as the volatility of bitcoin and other tokens makes them complicated for commerce. Unsystematic regulation and high energy consumption also hinder the spread of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment. Previously, Tesla accepted bitcoins, but it gave up due to environmental concerns.
Ferrari's marketing and commerce director, Enrico Galliera, said that they have made efforts to reduce their carbon footprint by implementing new software and increasing the use of renewable energy sources.
Our goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 across the entire value chain.
A Ferrari representative said that the decision was made in response to market and dealer requests, as many of their clients have invested in cryptocurrency.
Some of them are young investors who have built their wealth on cryptocurrencies. Others are more traditional investors who want to diversify their portfolios.
In the first half of this year, Ferrari shipped over 1,800 cars to its American region, which includes the United States. And throughout 2022, the Italian company sold 13,200 cars, with Europe and the Middle East being its largest markets.
