Leading foreign publications have released their first reviews of the PlayStation 5 Pro following Sony's press presentation. Journalists had the chance to test the new console and compare its capabilities with the standard PS5.

Reviewers unanimously note that games on the PS5 Pro showcase significantly improved graphics quality and high frame rates. The new console is capable of delivering 60 frames per second or more, with a level of detail that matches the "Quality" mode on the standard PS5.

Journalist The Vergeemphasized that the graphical enhancements are particularly noticeable up close. During the presentation, Sony deliberately positioned the press representatives as close as possible to 4K TVs to help them better appreciate the differences. However, at a distance of several meters, the distinctions become less apparent.

Reviewer Engadgetshared his impressions after a two-hour testing session of the PS5 Pro at Sony's studio in San Mateo, California. He noted that the jump from 30 frames per second on the standard PS5 to 60 frames on the PS5 Pro—especially at the same or even higher resolution—was a compelling argument for the new console. The difference was particularly striking in The Last of Us Part II Remastered, where the journalist compared the "Quality" mode at 4K/30fps on the standard PS5 to 4K/60fps on the PS5 Pro.

Developers have approached the use of the PS5 Pro's additional power in various ways. For instance, the Insomniac team focused on improving draw distance and enhancing the resolution of distant objects in Spider-Man 2. The result is crisp detailing during flights between Manhattan skyscrapers without the slight blurriness present in the standard version.

The technical director of Horizon Forbidden West shows a scene to a journalist from The Verge, demonstrating how the PS5 Pro loads a dinosaur skin with higher quality and faster than the PS5.

F1 24 can now utilize ray tracing at 4K/60fps during races. The performance mode of the game can achieve 4K/120fps on the Pro, whereas current models are limited to 1440p.

Experts from Digital Foundrycompare acquiring a PS5 Pro to upgrading a graphics card on a PC. They believe that the new console opens up additional capabilities: higher frame rates, improved detail, and ray tracing effects. Oliver Mackenzie from DF asserts that for those who use PlayStation as their primary gaming platform, purchasing the PS5 Pro is indeed justified.

The PSSR image scaling technology, according to specialists, works well without critical visual artifacts. It consistently improves overall image quality, though it currently falls short of DLSS in terms of effectiveness.

Despite the overall performance boost, the PS5 Pro has the same CPU limitations as the standard version. Therefore, in CPU-intensive games like Dragon's Dogma 2, the new console may not consistently deliver 60 frames per second.

Recall that at the State of Play 2024, Sony announced seven new games that will receive enhancements for the PlayStation 5 Pro console.
