Google plans to provide access to the Gemini AI model on Pixel 8 smartphones. Previously, advanced artificial intelligence features were only available on the Pixel 8 Pro version. Both models are equipped with the same Tensor G3 processor designed to accelerate AI tasks. Therefore, the overall user experience with both devices should be similar.
The Gemini Nano AI model, designed for on-device tasks, will be available on Pixel 8 with the next Pixel Feature Drop release. Initially, this will be a developer preview. Google wants to gather feedback and ensure smooth operation on a phone with slightly lower specifications.

This is quite an unexpected change for Google. Initially, the company stated that the Pixel 8 cannot run Gemini on the device due to "hardware limitations," despite having the same processor available in the Pro model. The main difference between the two phones is the memory allocation. It seems that Google no longer considers this a significant issue for launching the AI model on the device.
It is expected that with the release of Gemini Nano on Pixel 8, owners of these smartphones will have access to at least two new features. The Recorder app will receive an enhanced feature to summarize recorded conversations based on Gemini, which works locally on the device. A similar tool already exists but requires a network connection. In the future, data will no longer need to be sent to a server. The Smart Reply Gboard tool will offer message responses based on conversation context.
