Google is without competitors for now: the website of The New York Times and 13 other top publications blocked access to SearchGPT's search engine

SearchGPT, created by the developers of ChatGPT, is positioned as a powerful AI-driven alternative to Google, but recently, several leading international publications have unexpectedly blocked access to this alternative search engine.

As reported by Business Insider (citing data from Originality.ai), The New York Times, Wired, The New Yorker, and Vogue (a total of 14 top publications) have blocked OpenAI's SearchGPT—without providing a reason. This decision will significantly hinder the new search engine’s ability to compete with Google, as the data returned in response to user queries will be incomplete.

John Gillam, CEO of Originality.ai, suggests that publishers may distrust OpenAI, as the new AI-based search engines could keep users engaged by providing brief summaries of content instead of redirecting them to the original articles, thereby reducing traffic and revenue for publishers.

Additionally, it's worth noting that this year, OpenAI has signed several agreements with publishers to use their archived materials for AI training, while The New York Times has sued the company for copyright infringement (allegedly, OpenAI's chatbot copied millions of the publication's articles without permission).
