Google has announced a series of updates for Android even before the start of the MWC exhibition, including the integration of Gemini with Messages and AI text summarization for driving. Users of Messages will be able to access the Google chatbot without leaving the messaging app. Gemini in Messages will be able to perform basic tasks such as writing messages and assisting in event planning, or you can simply have a chat with it. The feature is still in beta testing and is currently only available to English-speaking users of Messages, Google reports.
Android Auto is also getting artificial intelligence features to help minimize distractions on the road. If a group chat disrupts your phone with continuous messages or if someone sends you text novels, Android Auto will automatically summarize the message and read you a more concise version, according to Engadget. It will also offer responses and actions based on notifications, such as sharing the expected arrival time so you can reply with a single touch and focus on driving.
At the exhibition, Google also announced some new accessibility features for Android, particularly image captions in the Lookout app generated by artificial intelligence. It will be able to generate descriptions for images found on the internet or received in messages, and read them aloud to the user. The feature is currently only available in English, but will be rolled out globally in the future. The Lens feature in Google Maps will also receive an extended screen reading option, allowing users to point their phone's camera at something in front of them, such as a restaurant or a subway station, and hear information about it.
Updates for Android also include new Spotify controls called Spotify Connect, allowing users to easily switch between their devices, such as from headphones to a speaker. This feature was already available for YouTube Music.
