Blizzard has generated a massive revenue from Diablo 4 in the year since the game's release. Harrison Froschke, the senior product manager for the game, disclosed an approximate figure.
The information was revealed not on the official developer's website, but on Froschke's LinkedIn profile, in his professional achievements. Since the launch, Diablo IV has brought in over $1 billion in revenue, with approximately $150 million coming from internal microtransactions. Subsequently, the manager likely realized that he had shared too much and removed his page.
As Froschke wrote, his role at Blizzard included "guiding the strategy for monetizing store cosmetics, pricing, bundle offers, personalized discounts, and roadmap planning, which generated over $150 million in MTX revenue." He also handled "every sales step for the game from pre-orders to the first expansion, configuring and collaborating with other teams, leading to a total revenue of over $1 billion since the game's inception."
It is noteworthy that within five days after its release in June 2023, Diablo 4 had already earned $666 million, largely due to pre-orders. This made the fourth installment of the franchise one of the fastest-selling games of all time. Blizzard proudly boasted about this fact. Therefore, surpassing the billion-dollar mark may not seem so surprising.
Developers are likely to experience another revenue boost soon, as the first expansion for Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred is set to be released in less than a month. Vessel of Hatred will launch on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 8, 2024. This date will also mark the start of the game's sixth season.
