Despite the massive losses from the Borderlands movie adaptation, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford assures that the team is not abandoning the franchise and may soon announce the fourth installment of the game.
The recent adaptation of Borderlands suffered a crushing defeat at the box office, losing $100 million. Critics tore apart the film, labeling it a "disaster" and "uninspired." The movie received a zero rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes immediately upon its release.
Due to the failure on the big screen, the creators of the franchise decided to focus on what fans value the most — video games. Randy Pitchford hinted at exciting prospects for Borderlands 4, playing on words in English: using "four" instead of "for." This not-so-subtle allusion sparked lively discussions among fans of the series.
So what you're saying is: You like what my friends and I do with our Borderlands video games even more than you like what some of the biggest and best cast and crew of filmmakers on the planet have done. I'm super flattered! We're working extra hard four you on what's next….

Take-Two Interactive, which acquired Gearbox for $460 million, announced the development of a new game in the Borderlands universe even before the film's release. The timing of this announcement proved very timely, as the franchise is currently in need of success.
Interestingly, despite the movie's flop, it has nonetheless increased interest in the gaming series. Following the film's premiere, Borderlands 3 surged in the Steam sales charts; according to the portal SteamDB, the peak number of concurrent players reached approximately 12,300 — the highest number since February 2023.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the next installment of the series, as the last main game, Borderlands 3, was released back in 2019. Although several successful spin-offs have been released since then, players are craving a full-fledged continuation. Pitchford admitted that he is "flattered" by the fact that fans prefer video games over the cinematic interpretation of the Borderlands universe.
Borderlands is an iconic first-person shooter series with RPG elements that has captured the hearts of millions of players with its unique style. Set on the dangerous planet of Pandora and other worlds, players take on the role of "Vault Hunters" hunting for legendary alien treasures. The series is renowned for its dark humor, charismatic characters, and, above all, the incredible variety of weapons — over a billion unique combinations.
