Sony Interactive Entertainment is discontinuing its new multiplayer shooter Concord just two weeks after its launch due to negative player feedback and low popularity.
Concord was in development for eight years and was intended to be the next big success for PlayStation following the positive reception of Helldivers 2. The game was released on August 23, 2024, for PlayStation 5 and PC after a beta test in July. However, Concord quickly became one of the least well-received projects by the company.
Ryan Ellis, game director at Firewalk Studios, reported on the PlayStation blog that some aspects of the game and its launch "did not meet expectations." As a result, Sony has decided to cease support for Concord.
According to an official statement, the servers for Concord will be shut down on September 6, 2024. Sales of the game have been immediately halted. Players who purchased Concord through digital stores for PlayStation 5 or PC will receive a full refund. Owners of physical copies are advised to contact retailers for refunds.
While exact player numbers have not been disclosed, it is known that Concord's performance on Steam was extremely low — at the time of release, there were only up to 700 concurrent players. The decision to shut down the game and refund all customers indicates that the project failed to succeed on any platform.
Critics noted that the game has "a solid foundation, an interesting class-switching feature, and impressive graphics," but at the same time, it "makes a terrible first impression" and is "hard to sell" in its current state. Such a decisive action to close the game and issue refunds is unprecedented in the modern gaming service industry.
