BMW is recalling certain versions of the electric sedan i4 Gran Coupe due to a potential issue with the rear left longitudinal chassis beam. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the beam may have been manufactured by a supplier not in accordance with specifications, potentially containing cracks near the flange of the rivet used for supporting the rear wheel arch.
This defect could compromise the structural integrity of the chassis. Furthermore, in the event of a collision, the second-row seating area and the high-voltage battery could sustain damage, increasing the risk of injury and fire. This recall affects only the 2024 model year BMW i4 and encompasses approximately 1,150 models of the i4 eDrive40, i4 xDrive40, and i4 M50. The affected vehicles were produced between March 7 and April 27, 2024.
To address the issue, BMW dealers will replace the problematic component free of charge. BMW has stated that it is unaware of any warranty claims, customer complaints, or reports of actual incidents related to this defect. The company also confirmed that it knows of no accidents or injuries associated with this issue.
Another recall for the 2024 BMW i4 was announced in February, concerning the potential overheating of high-voltage batteries due to an insufficient number of welds in the battery modules. Additionally, BMW recalled around a hundred electric vehicles from the BMW iX and BMW i4 in 2022 due to the risk of battery fires.
