"Autonomous" Tesla Full Self-Driving requires intervention every 21km - independent testing

The Tesla Full Self-Driving system was evaluated by the independent company AMCI. The "autonomous" driving system requires manual intervention on average every 21 km.

One of the major concerns related to Tesla's Full Self-Driving program under scrutiny is that the automaker has consistently refused to share data regarding the number of necessary interventions and any related statistics for three years. Car owners have to rely on unofficial observations and crowdsourced data.

"If the data were genuinely impressive, Musk would have released it on X. The fact that he is withholding it speaks volumes," commented one user online.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has responded positively to these observations, despite the results not being particularly encouraging. For instance, over 22,500 km of crowdsourced data for software versions FSD v12.5.1 shows an average of 50 km between interventions and 280 km between critical interventions.

The independent firm AMCI Testing specializes in vehicle testing. AMCI staff drove over 1,600 km with FSD 12.5.1 and 12.5.3 in 2024 using a Model 3 under various driving conditions. The results turned out to be even worse than what most critics of FSD anticipated. The company reports over 75 interventions, or an average of once every 21 km. AMCI shared a series of videos showing some actions and errors of the Tesla system.

Testers acknowledge that Tesla's FSD system is impressive during initial attempts, but caution that the emotional thrill that a driver may experience can lead to decreased attention and dangerous situations. Guy Mangiameli, director of AMCI Testing, explains:

"It cannot be denied that FSD 12.5.1 is impressive, given the many enthusiastic reviews it has received. However, its apparent infallibility in the first five minutes generates a sense of adoration that inevitably leads to dangerous complacency. Situations where drivers operate with FSD engaged and hands off the wheel or far from it are incredibly hazardous. As seen in the videos, the most critical FSD calculation mistakes occur in fractions of a second, and even professional drivers with test mindsets need to stay focused."

AMCI reports that another series of videos showcasing the first 1,000 miles on FSD will be published next week, and the company plans to test future updates. Electrek journalist Fred Lambert states that he tested Tesla FSD v12.5.2 and received similar results to those reported by the company.
