The studio Bloober Team, known for their remake of Silent Hill 2, announced a shift in their game development approach following the success of this project.
For a long time, Bloober Team had a mixed reputation due to their previous horror games. Some intrigued players but had shortcomings, while others were ridiculed for their odd features. However, the situation changed with the highly praised release of the Silent Hill 2 remake.
In a discussion with Gamespot, the co-directors of the remake acknowledged the criticism of the studio’s earlier works and shared their plans. Jacek Ziba stated, “We want to find our niche, and we think we’ve found it, so now we need to grow within it.”
“This process is quite challenging, but it is happening and organically. For instance, with Layers of Fear [2016], people at the studio said, ‘Okay, we used to make crappy games, but we can evolve,’” he continued.
Wojciech Piejko added that Bloober Team consists of “a team that loves horror.” He emphasized, “We could [work in other genres], but we don’t want to.”
Previous projects by Bloober Team, particularly Layers of Fear, The Medium, and the Blair Witch adaptation, had potential but suffered from imperfect gameplay or illogical narratives. In contrast, the remake of Silent Hill 2 became the studio's most successful game, receiving high praise from critics for its atmosphere and combat system.
Bloober Team plans to maintain this success with their upcoming project—a sci-fi horror titled Cronos: The New Dawn, which is set to be released next year on PC, Xbox, and PS5.
