According to the research company IDC, global smartphone shipments grew by 7.8% during January-March, reaching 289.4 million units, with Samsung taking the top spot among manufacturers with a market share of 20.8%, surpassing Apple.
iPhone shipments in the first quarter fell by 10% due to increased competition from Android-based smartphone manufacturers - Apple now holds a 17.3% market share. Xiaomi came in third - one of the leading Chinese smartphone manufacturers obtained a 14.1% market share during the first quarter.
Samsung, which released its flagship smartphone lineup (the Galaxy S24 series) earlier this year, shipped more than 60 million phones during this period. Global sales of Galaxy S24 smartphones increased by 8% - compared to last year's Galaxy S23 series in the first three weeks of their availability, as previously reported by Counterpoint.
As for Apple, the company shipped 50.1 million iPhones - in the same period last year, this number reached 55.4 million units. iPhone shipments in China in the last quarter of 2023 decreased by 2.1% compared to the previous year. Earlier, the country banned the use of Apple smartphones by government employees.
According to the IDC report, both Apple and Samsung saw a decline in shipments year over year, while Chinese manufacturers Xiaomi and Transsion grew by almost 34% and 85%, respectively, compared to the first quarter of last year.
