The development of a foldable smartphone by Samsung was reported last year—though without any specific details. Now, not only is the release timeframe known, but also some specifics.
According to The Elec, Samsung plans to release a smartphone with a screen resembling a scroll by 2025. The publication claims that the size of the unfolded screen will be 12.4 inches—larger than the 10.2 inches of the recently launched Huawei Mate XT, which is made up of three parts.
It is likely that this is the same 12.4-inch flexible display that Samsung Display showcased at the SID Display Week 2024 event. Furthermore, the report mentions that the phone will feature an under-display camera.
If the timelines hold true, Samsung's smartphone will be the first in the world with a rollable display. Tentatively, no other brand is expected to release a phone in this form factor until at least 2025. With less than a year remaining before the anticipated launch, if preparations are indeed underway, more leaks should be expected in the near future.
Last year, we reported on Samsung Display's development of Rollable Flex technology for flexible displays. The company has managed to fit all necessary components into a compact form factor. Displays based on Rollable Flex technology can extend from 49 mm to 254.4 mm—more than five times their initial size.
