iPhone users will no longer be able to adjust the volume using the physical buttons of their smartphone while using Spotify Connect.
According to Spotify's support page, Apple has "discontinued" this technology, yet they haven't provided any explanations.
This change specifically affects the Spotify Connect feature, which allowed iPhone users to manage the Spotify app on speakers, game consoles, smart TVs, computers, and similar devices.
From now on, when an iPhone owner hits the volume adjustment button, a notification will appear in the Spotify app suggesting the use of a slider to control the sound directly within the application. This change will take effect on September 3, but it might already be visible to some users.
Meanwhile, volume adjustment using buttons works seamlessly with Apple Music's similar functionality.
“We have reached out to Apple for a solution similar to what they provide to HomePod and Apple TV users for app developers managing non-Apple multimedia devices,” Spotify stated in their update.
Spotify and Apple have a long history of disputes, and this latest update serves as yet another opportunity for the audio streaming service to accuse the company of violating the EU Digital Markets Act.
In March of this year, the EU fined Apple $2 billion following Spotify’s complaint regarding the “blocking” of alternative music apps (the third largest fine imposed by the EU and the first directed at Apple).
