Adobe has "pumped up" Photoshop - and added generative artificial intelligence to Firefly Image 3

Adobe has added several new generative artificial intelligence tools to its Photoshop program. They are intended to provide users with additional ways to control the projects they create. Thanks to the new base model Adobe Firefly Image 3, these new tools are available in the beta version of the desktop Photoshop application and will become publicly available "later this year."

The Reference Image tool uses images uploaded by users to inspire AI to create a result by matching similar elements by style and color. For example, instead of repeatedly adjusting a brief description, such as "a blue old truck with floral stickers," users can instead provide a reference image for Photoshop to use as a reference.

It is expected that users will have the right to use the image they provide as an example. The corresponding requirement will be noted upon the first use of the tool, and the company is working on a universal tag "do not learn" for the Adobe Content Authenticity Initiative, which will also block the use of images as examples. Images uploaded as reference materials will not be used to train Firefly. Adobe claims that this new example-based image creation tool is "safe for commercial use." This is one of the significant advantages that, according to Adobe, Firefly has over competing generative AI models.

Another generative tool, Generate Background, replaces and creates new background images for things like product photos. Meanwhile, Enhance Detail sharpens and makes images clearer.

Generate Similar uses one of the three images generated by Photoshop Firefly tools as a reference to create similar-looking content. And the Generate Image feature allows users to create a complete image from a blank page based on a text description.

The third-generation Adobe Firefly model has image generation capabilities superior to its predecessor. It is also available in the globally accessible beta version, which anyone can try outside of Photoshop through the Firefly web application. Adobe says their latest Firefly model provides "photo-realistic quality like never before, with better lighting, positioning, and attention to detail." Firefly Image 3 is better than the previous Firefly model, recognizing long descriptive text prompts and reproducing clearer text on the created images.

In addition to generative AI, Adobe is also adding new standard tools to Photoshop that can speed up creative processes. These include the Adjustment Brush, which allows Photoshop users to make non-destructive changes, such as adjusting color, to specific parts of an image. There are also new Adjustment Presets that can quickly manipulate images with filters, and an enhanced Font Browser that provides real-time access to over 25,000 fonts in the Adobe cloud without leaving the Photoshop program.
