WhatsApp developers are working on several feature updates for their messenger. This includes providing users with the ability to exchange files through a local network - without the Internet. They will also add a way to record notes for people in the contact list.

Earlier, there was already information about the ability to share files through a local network. However, new installation screenshots of the application show what specific permissions users need to grant in order to enable this feature.

These screenshots are taken from the beta version WhatsApp 2.24.9.22 for Android. They show that developers are testing a new way to exchange photos, videos, documents, and other files with nearby WhatsApp users, even without cellular connection or the Internet.

According to one of the screenshots, in order to exchange files through a local network, users will have to choose to make them visible to other nearby users. Notably, users will have the ability to revoke these permissions at any time. And, similar to WhatsApp messages, file sharing is end-to-end encrypted, and phone numbers are hidden throughout the interaction process.

WhatsApp is also testing a feature that allows users to add notes to contacts. In the beta version WhatsApp 2.24.9.17 for Android, a new feature has been added, which includes a notes field on the contact list, allowing users to add useful information about the contact for context. Notes can only be viewed by the user who wrote them, not the contact. It seems that the notes feature will not be exclusive to the mobile application, as it will also be available for the web version of WhatsApp.

Both features are currently in beta status. The exact launch dates are unknown.
