Today - on Earth Day - the non-profit search engine Ecosia launched "the most environmentally friendly browser on Earth." It aims to offer customers a more sustainable alternative to Google Chrome or Apple Safari.

Similar to the Ecosia search engine, the more you use the browser, the more trees you will help plant. The company claims that it has already planted 200 million trees since 2009.

The new browser will run on renewable energy from Ecosia's own solar power stations. The company even claims that the browser will actually generate green energy - 25 watt-hours per user daily when browsing web pages. This is enough to power a light bulb for 3 hours. This may seem little, but if multiplied by the 20 million existing Ecosia search engine users, the result will be more significant.

According to developers, the Ecosia browser is optimized for speed. It is claimed that pages load 3 times faster than most major browsers. This is achieved through a built-in ad blocker that reduces user data and energy consumption.

The browser is built on the Chromium platform and will be familiar to those already using Chrome. This includes viewing settings and security features, such as password management and SSL encryption. At the same time, users will have access to existing Ecosia features, such as the green leaf icon, climate commitment rating, and the recently launched AI Chat based on OpenAI. The chatbot generates "greener responses", directing users to environmental solutions.

It should be noted that the Ecosia browser contains "sponsored links" feature. As a result, users can make online purchases while supporting Ecosia's climate change projects at no additional cost. This will create a new revenue stream for the company, which previously earned all its money from ad revenue. Ecosia claims that all its profits are directly allocated to tree planting projects worldwide. And now, with the new browser, to clean energy production.

The Ecosia browser is available for Mac and Windows computers through the download page, as well as for mobile devices through app stores for Android and iOS.
