Last year, Spotify launched an experiment and restricted some users of its free version from accessing song lyrics. After several months of testing, the company is ready to implement this restriction for a wider range of users, reports ITC.UA.
So, from now on, those users who want to view the lyrics of a song while listening must pay for a Spotify Premium subscription. In recent days, several Reddit users have written about the new limitations of Spotify and expressed their disappointment with such steps from the company. The feature that has been free for years now requires users to pay a monthly fee.
Although blocking access to song lyrics through paid access makes sense from a business perspective, it may push users away. Expanding restrictions for the free level gradually makes the service less usable. Trying to push more users to subscribe to Spotify Premium, the company risks pushing them towards competitors who have not introduced such limitations.
Currently, Spotify already limits users of the free version of the service to only six track skips per hour and forcibly plays tracks in random order. As a result, the free level acts as a sort of radio that users have little control over. Meanwhile, the free plan of YouTube Music allows for unlimited track skips, includes song lyrics, ads that can be skipped, and does not force users to shuffle the playback queue.
