Double blow: 12VHPWR connector burned NVIDIA RTX 4090 and power supply at the same time

Double blow: 12VHPWR connector burned NVIDIA RTX 4090 and power supply at the same time

Troubles related to the 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector for video cards continue. The owner of NVIDIA RTX 4090 shared a terrible story on the Korean forum Quasar Zone about how the melted connector "dragged into the grave" not only the video card but also the power supply.

Most often, cases of melting of the 12VHPWR occurred either on the video card or on the power supply, but this time both devices were affected. The photos show the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 Suprim X 24G video card, which is powered by the FSP Hydro power supply. It is surprising that the RTX 4090 was not even running at full speed: the user limited the power to 75%.

Sometimes owners of RTX 4090 video cards play with various power restrictions to maximize efficiency or reduce the risk of melting the 16-pin power connector. However, as it can be seen, this is not a panacea.

Despite the subsequent introduction of the new version of the connector by the organization PCI-SIG, 12V-2×6, many NVIDIA RTX 4090 video cards from previous batches are still in use by users and sometimes fail, even two years after release. Not even third-party connection cables help – Cablemod, one of the most popular manufacturers in this area, had to recall their products due to the danger.
