Volkswagen has unveiled a new vehicle named Tayron in Europe. It has been available in China since 2018 and is now making its way into the European portfolio of the company. Essentially, it is a seven-seat version of the latest generation Tiguan. In other words, it replaces the older Tiguan Allspace that has been sold in Europe.
The new Volkswagen Tayron is positioned in the company's lineup between the Tiguan and the larger Touareg. It can be considered the equivalent of the Skoda Kodiaq. Both the interior and exterior design are not surprising, as it closely resembles an extended Tiguan. It has a length of 4770 mm, which is 231 mm longer than the standard crossover. To accommodate the third row of seats (although it will also be available in a two-row configuration), its wheelbase has been increased by 114 mm to 2791 mm. The Tayron measures 1852 mm in width and 1660 mm in height, both of which are slightly larger than the Tiguan.
The trunk capacity behind the seats ranges from 345 liters (for the version with the third row) to 885 liters (for the two-row model). By folding down the second row, the capacity increases to 2090 liters for the two-row version and 1905 liters for the three-row configuration. The Volkswagen Tayron will also be available in a hybrid version, but only with two rows of seating. Since the battery takes up some space, the usable trunk volume decreases to 705 liters with the rear seats up and to 1915 liters when they are folded down. If that’s not enough, the vehicle is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 2.5 tons.
All Tayron versions come with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. For the plug-in hybrid, a six-speed automatic is offered, while the internal combustion engine version gets a seven-speed automatic. The PHEV versions are front-wheel drive, just like the base variants with petrol and diesel engines. The entry-level new crossover features a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 148 hp and 250 Nm of torque. This engine is supplemented with mild-hybrid technology and can operate on just two cylinders to save fuel when extra power is not needed.
The engine lineup also includes an economical 2.0 TDI diesel with the same 148 hp, but offering much higher torque of 360 Nm. The all-wheel-drive version has a more powerful 2.0 TDI engine that delivers 201 hp and 400 Nm. VW will also market the Tayron with two petrol engines of 2.0 TSI, one producing 148 hp and 320 Nm, and the other 261 hp and 400 Nm.
The plug-in hybrids offer two powertrain versions that combine a turbocharged 1.5-liter petrol engine with an electric motor. One provides 201 hp, while the other produces 268 hp. The PHEV includes a 19.7 kWh lithium-ion battery with support for 50 kW DC charging. A full charge allows for a range of 100 km. Combined with its fuel tank, the Tayron eHybrid can cover approximately 850 km.
Inside, the Volkswagen Tayron features a 15-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, traditional buttons on the steering wheel, but it lacks an additional screen for the passenger.
Pre-sales of the new Volkswagen Tayron commence on October 10, starting at €45475. The vehicle will be offered in Life, Elegance, and R-Line configurations.
