Volkswagen has unveiled a new plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Multivan lineup. The Multivan eHybrid 4Motion replaces the previous PHEV version, adding all-wheel drive.
Under the hood, there is a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine that works in conjunction with two electric motors. With the electric motor located on each axle, the Multivan eHybrid now features all-wheel drive.
The new model uses a battery with a capacity of 19.7 kWh, nearly double that of the previous version. It supports AC charging at 11 kW and DC fast charging at 50 kW. The Multivan eHybrid 4Motion has an all-electric range of up to 95 km.
Up to a speed of 64 km/h, the rear electric motor is always activated to provide all-wheel drive "launch support." Interestingly, the rear axle electric motor operates even when the battery is depleted. In this case, the power required for electric drive is automatically generated by the TSI gasoline engine and the front electric motor, which acts as a generator.
With the help of a disconnect unit, the rear electric motor can be automatically disengaged by the hybrid system to enhance efficiency in standard traction conditions.
The new eHybrid 4Motion powertrain will be available in the Multivan and California models.
