Volkswagen has confirmed the development of a new fully electric Golf, but what does this mean for the ID.3? VW's technical director, Kai Grünitz, says that these two electric cars have the same potential buyers, but the legendary status of the Golf brand is an important advantage.
This year Volkswagen is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Golf after the first model rolled off the assembly line in March 1974. Since then, VW has sold more than 37 million Golf cars of eight generations worldwide. Grünitz confirmed that the next generation will be fully electric and will likely be released in 2028.
What does this mean for the ID.3? The fully electric hatchback, designed to replace the e-Golf, may be replaced by the new electric Golf.
We don't have enough space to have two or three different models for one potential customer. We started working on the fully electric Golf, but there will be overlap with the ID.3.
- explained Grünitz.
Grünitz stated that the Golf is the "heart of our brand" and said that VW has no intention of killing off this name. According to Grünitz, the electric Golf will be a "real Golf". "It should look like a Golf. It should be as affordable as a Golf. It should drive like a Golf." Kai also confirmed that there will be a GTI version.
The new fully electric Golf will not be based on the MEB platform like the ID.3. According to Grünitz, it will be built on the next generation SSP platform.
