The publication Rock Paper Shotgun had the opportunity to test the demo version of the shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 at Gamescom 2024 and shared its impressions of the game. The journalists also published snippets of their conversation with representatives from GSC Game World.

Despite the limited game time, the journalists noted significant improvements compared to previous installments in the series. Technically, "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl" has made a considerable advancement. Character movements have become smoother, while weapon controls are more user-friendly. The inventory system, although it retains the familiar grid layout, now operates faster and more intuitively. At the same time, the developers have preserved the complexity and danger of the game world that is characteristic of the series.

The demo began with a short cutscene where the player is delivered into the Zone. Journalists were able to explore a ruined outpost, interact with classic S.T.A.L.K.E.R. anomalies, and encounter mutants. They were particularly impressed by the absence of intrusive background music, which enhances the atmosphere of tension and danger.

Reviewers noted that the weapons in the game have significant recoil but are still comfortable to use. They also observed the absence of excessive hints and simplifications in the user interface, which helps maintain the spirit of the original series.

GSC Game World CEO Evgeny Grigorovich discussed the balance between new and old elements in the game:

“Our primary goal is to create a game for players who have no prior knowledge of the previous installments. We understand that we will have a large number of new players and want them to enjoy the game.”

At the same time, for fans, there will be enough Easter eggs, including familiar characters and locations.

Grigorovich also noted that the team is targeting the console audience and Xbox Game Pass subscribers. Despite this, the developers strive to maintain the unique atmosphere of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Interestingly, the developers are trying to strike a balance between revealing information about the game and maintaining intrigue. Grigorovich admitted:

“As the game director, I want to hide everything from the player. I’m fighting with the marketing team because they want to show as much as possible!”

Journalists particularly highlighted the visual component of the game. A nighttime raid in the radioactive Zone impressed them with its ambiance and environmental detail. The sound design also received positive feedback—footsteps, rustling grass, and distant sounds from the Zone create an unforgettable sense of presence.

Among GSC's significant decisions was the actual removal of the Russian language from the game. At the same time, the developers chose to incorporate elements that emphasize Ukrainian culture. For instance, the game will feature mosaics reflecting national motifs. The developers emphasize that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is not an anti-war game.

Although the demo was relatively short, it left a positive impression on the journalists. They noted that the game retains the spirit of the original series while “simultaneously offering a modern gaming experience.”

As a reminder, we have already reported on the impressions of Japanese journalists from the demo of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl." The game will also have two narrative expansions.

The release of "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl" is scheduled for November 20. The game will be available on PC and Xbox Series X/S, and it will also be accessible through the Game Pass service upon release.
