The Ukrainian YouTube channel Andro-News has released the first exclusive video review of the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL smartphone on the internet. The sample provided by the company Pixophone is an engineering model, but it's unlikely that there will be significant changes in the final version.

The Pixel 9 Pro XL has taken on a more iPhone-like appearance, not least due to its flat steel edges — yes, the Pixel 9 has lost the rounded design that distinguished it from most smartphones on the market. The significantly redesigned camera module now protrudes about half the thickness of the smartphone. While it was close to this thickness before, it was somewhat concealed by the rounded edges.

The dimensions and layout of the Pixel 9 Pro XL's elements are nearly identical to its predecessor. The Google smartphone also shares similar measurements with the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max, being just a few millimeters longer. The SIM card tray has been relocated to the bottom. The back cover is made of matte glass and the body is protected against moisture and dust with an IP68 rating. There are four known color options for the 9 Pro XL — black, gray, pink, and porcelain (white).

The smartphone's display is now completely flat, with nearly imperceptible external edges from the front. The internal bezel of the display has also been slightly reduced compared to the Pixel 8 Pro and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. The screen measures 6.8 inches, features LTPO OLED technology, has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and boasts a resolution of 1344×2992, ~487 PPI; it likely features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Visually, the screen quality is almost indistinguishable from its predecessor, except possibly for a greater brightness.

All Pixel 9 series models are equipped with the Tensor G4 processor, which provides decent but not the best performance on the market. According to tests, the processor is about 15% more powerful than the G3. Google promises a significant increase in battery life. The smartphone will be available in configurations of 12 GB / 256 GB, 12 GB / 512 GB, and 16 GB / 1 TB of storage.

According to Dmitry Golub, the camera module has hardly changed compared to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, the front camera has received a significant upgrade — from 10.5 MP to 42 MP. The engineering model lacks access to the cameras, so comparisons will likely be possible only after the public release.

Out of the box, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL will feature the latest version of Android 15, with seven years of system and security updates. The smartphone will come with Pixel Screenshot and other enhanced AI features. Owners of the Pixel 9 Pro XL will receive a free year of Gemini Advanced subscription. The release of the Pixel 9 smartphones is expected on August 13.
