A remake of the 1988 JRPG Dragon Quest 3 was announced three years ago and received a trailer, which reimagined the classic game in the HD-2D art style from Octopath Traveler. Now, publisher Square Enix has announced an update to the project.
Today, May 27, the official Dragon Quest series account published a short video highlighting the Dragon Quest logo and the platforms Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC - Square Enix recently announced a shift to a multi-platform strategy instead of temporarily locking exclusives on PS.
Interestingly, the published video could be a teaser for the anticipated HD-2D remake or even a series of remakes. "The legend of Erdrick draws near," says the tweet. Although the name Erdrick is associated with the latest Dragon Quest 11, the "legend of Erdrick" unfolds in the first three games of the series, not just in Dragon Quest 3.

Yes, the announcement does not directly mention the remake of Dragon Quest 3. But the "HD-2D" logo implies it - Dragon Quest 3 is currently the only known HD-2D game in production by the company. However, the absence of the name Dragon Quest 3 leaves room for something else, possibly even a series of remakes of classic Dragon Quest games.
